which means the Seven Council Fires. Within the Oceti Sakowin, three
dialects are spoken: Dakota, Nakotaand Lakota.The
original seven council fires are the Mdewakanton,
Wahpekute, Wahpeton, Sisseton (Dakota) , the
Yankton and the Yanktonai (Nakota)
and the Teton (Lakota). The Teton (Lakota)
group is also comprised of seven groups: the Oglala,
Sicangu, Hunkpapa, Minneconjou, Sihasapa,
O'ohenumpa, and the Itazipco. - Different spellings
are usual.

The
People of the Three Fires, the Ojibwe/Chippewa, Ottawa and
Potawatomi Nations are known collectively as the Anishinabek,
meaning "original men". The Anishinabek Nation was founded
in 1949 as the Union of Ontario Indians. Tribal groups
